June Round Up

June Round Up

Hi everyone the June round up is below for you. Sorry for the lateness of it again, I didn't get a chance to write it in Kununarra & have been at Keep River national park with no phone reception for a few days. We are currently in Katherine we have come across to the Territory to visit some of Mats family who are travelling, we were supposed to meet them in Mataranka but as we pulled up at Katherine today to get a few groceries it looks like we have done the transfer case seal on Ruby (we had the same problem in Tasmania), so we are stuck in Katherine until Toyota opens on Monday morning & they can have a look, luckily it happened here though or we might of been in big trouble.

On the 1st of June we were at Charnley River Station on the Gibb River Road on the 30th of June 2014 we were at Kununarra.

Total kilometres travelled 2081.8km.

Total diesel bought 288.11L, total cost $694.43 dearest diesel $2.50 at Mt Barnett roadhouse cheapest diesel $2.36 at Imintji.

Average fuel economy is hard to estimate this month as we fuelled up the car & a jerry can at Derby just before the start of June & then again at Kununurra early July, we have done our individual tanks & we are averaging about 17L/100km.

Camping. Camped 30 days in June. 0 free camp nights :(  30 paid.  Total cost $1099.80 average of $36.66 per night for paid camping.  Cheapest camp $20 a night for 2 people at Miners Pool at Drysdale Station & Wulumara camp on the King Edward River, Dearest camp fees $48 at El Questro for a private river campsite.

Best campsite - So many to choose from. Honeymoon beach at Kulumburu, El Questro & Wulumara.

Worst campsite - McGowans Island, perfect location but unfriendly host.

Best experiences - The Gibb River Road, Mitchell falls helicopter ride, the lack of crowds at the station gorges at Charnley River & Mt Elizabeth, the remoteness of Kulumburu, Emma gorge at El Questro, all the gorges in general.

Worst experiences - Average hospitality at Mc Gowans Island, food at El Questro, rude fellow road users going to fast & overtaking in unsafe places on the Gibb.

Best camp cooked meal - Pizzas, onion bombs (this will make a entry on the blog), roast beef.

Best bought meal - lunch at Home Valley Station, burger at Mt Barnett roadhouse.

Quotes of the month
We have had heard some cracker comments from our fellow travellers, so we have decided to bring you "Quotes of the month" to share.

Along the Gibb River a Road, an older lady commented "there are a lot of 4WDs on this road"

At the aboriginal rock art sites near the King Edward river again an elderly lady "is it real?".

Things we are missing
Our dogs Milly & Robbo, the family, phone reception, food shops, vacuum cleaner to get rid of some dust, car wash, cheaper diesel.

Things we are not missing
Work, Large crowds, bitumen.

The famous Pentecost river crossing.
